When a belt is earned - wear it
If its simply given - dont
When I grade my students it means I feel they should be that belt becuase of all the hard work and time they have done and if they dont work they get the next belt.
Tell him to go into the Club - train hard and when he is awarded his belt tell him to shack the guys hand and say thank you and then train even Fucking harder so that he cant get his arse kicked.

Besides, it's part of the moving up process and maturing that comes with the game. Belt or no belt, you come to the mat and suddenly find everybody gunning for you and going at it like there's no tomorro so what do you do? You deal with it. You play the game. You grow with the pressure.

GSP refused his black belt, he wanted to wait a little longer, then he got promoted to black about two months after.
but sometimes guys wanna do big and say win the worlds if there instructor promotes them before the worlds they might not be too happy

Refusing a Promotion.
It would be considered very bad form to refuse a promotion from your Instructor.I would be very offended if a student refused a promotion and i would take a long hard look at how i had arrived at the decision to promote someone with such a serious flaw in their understanding of Jiu Jitsu honour in the first place.
It is important to note that if a Black Belt who is not your Instructor or part of your close lineage tries to promote you it may infact be absolutely necassary to refuse the promotion.Sometimes this can occur at Seminars if you are being taught by a Black Belt who is trying to either set up a new territory or perhaps even trying to persuade students who are not his to join his team.
If you accept the belt it will cause problems with your own instructor.The best way imo to deal with this very delicate situation is to
accept the belt,do not refuse it in front of the class full of people.After the class or seminar go straight to the Black Belt who awarded it to you and say
"I am extremely honoured you have decided to promote me but i actually train with someone else and would like to wait to wear the belt until he promotes me as he is my teacher and i feel it would be disrespectful to him to accept the belt from you.I am sorry and i hope i haven't offended you".You then hand the belt back to him.Make sure this happens privately.
Then as soon as you go back to your academy tell your Instructor what happened immediately and he will be very proud of the way you dealt with it.

No to sandbag himself and enter in a lower belt division than his Instructor
deems his level to be at.
Simon, what if you don't train with a black belt but are promoted at a seminar, but you do not feel ready for the next belt. I ask this because someone people have a reputation for handing out belts a bit too easily at annual/bi-annual seminars. I am not making reference to any instructors based in the UK but those who have schools here but are based overseas.
