Anyone else surprised by this? I had no idea he was a brown belt.

I think theres a bit of an uproar on sherdog and the UG about it...

It's mainly summed up as follows:

    * 11 fights in the UFC never attempted a submission
    * Hardly anyone thought he trained in a GI or was ranked in BJJ although some say hes trained under Renzo?
    * A few people pointing to the gracies giving out dodgy black-belts in the past possibly for publicity reasons....
And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

not just that, but in the ufc you have seen him develop his striking and use it to good effect. if he has been concentrating on his striking so much, when has he had time to become a black belt in bjj, and also why would he not implement that into his game the same as he has done with his striking? you would think he would with subs more so as he is a wrestler so its just adding to his natural abilities and the positions he finds himself in. i thought it was bollocks myself but whatever

That was the bit that surprised me.

What other blackbelts do you think have questionable credentials? It seems like guys like cole miller and nate diaz had more effective grappling for mma than rashad when they were purple belts let alone if they faced off in the gi taking into account the size issue.

What he does in the cage has 0 to do with his bjj grade surely

    however isnt Silva a blackbelt?

I saw Rashad pass his guard and mount him....

Yeah he is a blackbelt as good to my knowledge. Much like you all I was very surprised when they said Evans had been given his BJJ blackbelt considering we have never seen him even attempt a sub as good to my knowledge in the UFC?
    Meh...........
