    Default BJJ for self defence.

How many people have actualy used their BJJ to defend an attack/win a fight?

I dont get into many fights tbh, im not really into going out on the piss and getting into a brawl. But its occasionaly pretty rough near me, so iv had a couple of scraps, and every one of them as ended up on the floor.

From the floor i have either controled them enough for people to step in, or iv actualy put a sub on.

Boxing/Muay thai and most striking i guess is used quite alot in this, but given the fact that 80% of most fights end up on the floor.....

How many people here have actually had to use their BJJ knowlegde to defend themselves?

I've had loads of fights over the years. Never once went to the ground. If it had, my instinct would be to stand up fu..in fast.

Choosing to go to the ground in a street fight is very dangerous. At most, knee on stomach. Not even mount.

    ^^this^^

BJJ as part of an overall skill set is obviously a plus.

when Rogan / Goldberg talk about fighters 'using wrestling in reverse', that should be the approach to grappling / submission / ground skills in the street.

jumping guard is suicide when a concrete slam is a possibility and mount probably gets your head caved in from behind.

    Stay on your feet IMHO

BJJ can help you a lot but I believe the Gracie's are very wrong and arrogant to call it a "complete self defence art" and that you dont need anything else for fighting.

Imo, a top striker like Melvin Manhoef (using him because all he has is striking) would absolutely destroy pure top BJJ guys who dont have anything else in a fight.
