Thread: Submissions in the guard

    Default Submissions in the guard

    What type of submissions can you do when you are on top, in the guard of your opponent. It seems that systematically one needs to pass to a least to side control for chokes and other submissions...the only exception are leglocks however I see nothing else....
    I am fairly new to BJJ which certainly explain my ignorance but I am curious to know your answers.... is there anything you can really do from this position other than passing the guard?....

    Ok, first off... trying to submit someone from inside the guard is USUALLY NOT A VERY GOOD IDEA AT ALL!!!

    That said, I have seen people get the following submissions from in the guard;

    Head and arm choke, ezekial choke, cross-collar choke & neck crank (can opener). Also the choke where you push one side of the collar down on the opposite side of the neck.

    I guess keylock/kimuras are possible, but very dangerous (you are giving them your back if they escape).

    Then, there are the obvious foot/leg locks from inside an open guard.

    Most submissions require you to have control of the persons body in order to seperate and isolate a limb/neck from it, but when you're in guard the other guy has control of your body, not vise versa. I can't think of anything except collar/forearm chokes that'd work. That's what passing was invented for.

    Not a good ideaa to attempt submissions from guard as it makes you extremelly susceptible to being submitted. You can however utilize various chokes, but that leave you open to arm bars, triangle, being swept ..etc..

    Stick to basics, break the guard.

    Try choking them with your hands. Keep your arms nice and straight tho!
