Default Covering with your shoulder but staying relaxed

How, the fuck, does this work?

When I'm working on my boxing my coach is constantly telling me to keep my chin covered with my shoulder, when I do he's telling me to relax my shoulders(which makes sense, because hunching gasses my arms and shoulders)

How the fuck do I do both?

i think he is saying tuck your chin down, keeping your hands up will bring your shoulders up anyway and coupled with the boxing stance your leading shoulder is your left which is raised.

does that make it clear lol

Are you talking about shoulder roll or just your normal guard?

Its all about experience. Its takes time brother. There are many paradoxes in sport. Maximum effort + maximal relaxation. If your blocking with your shoulder your inital efforts will be bracing for the impact, as you get better at doing this you will be able to relax more and the block will be minimal in effort giving you more vision and enabling you to start thinking about countering whilst doing it. keep at it mate, i hope that helps. Train hard but train smart.
If you put a limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.

Look through your eye brows to keep your chin down and keep your jab popping out with your chin tucked nicely against it and resist turning your head away from your punching hand. That should keep the guard tight with minimal shrugging of the shoulder.

Thats my 2cents but theres some unbelievable strikers on here if you wait and see who posts.

i used to have the same problem, but after being reminded by coaches and training partners so many times its just become a habit, and you kinda forget that its actually tiring to keep your shoulders shrugged all the time.

How I have read it is that he wants you to increase the overall head & shoulder movement when your throwing, avoiding and recieving shots.

For example roll your shoulders in conjunction with your head movement im assuming as not only would it increase your fluidity but also make you much slicker in defence and timing the incoming shots to smash back with some smooth counters!

If you look at a raw noob boxing for example and then a pretty decent high level boxer you will notice how their whole upperbody movements seem to be intwined and flowing. Whereas most people who cant strike for shit will be all herky jerky. Like waving the chin about as head movement without any other movements, like the classic old throw a punch whilst throwing your head back shit.
