Is it fair/possible to get to purple belt level without ever competing?

Sorry removing all posts as it makes me seem like a troll, been looking at this forum for a long time and don't want to come over bad, just realised what I said is a bit controversial (not on purpose)

What if they've only competed once or twice and the pressure has got to them and they've not fared too well? Would it still be possible if they gained the relevant level of knowledge/expertise appropriate would you still grade them?Not possible at my club
