I read energy drinks are really not a good idea as they can dramatically increase your heart rate, taken regularly you can become reliant on caffeine, and as they're carbonated aren't good for rehydration. When training/competing you need to replace fluids lost and the best way to do this is by simply drinking water. I'm sure other supplements can be added to water as required but fizzy drinks & caffeine based drinks are not the way to go.

As for before excercise, well would you have two double espressos before a competition?

Why not have 2 double expressos before a comp? You will go ballistic!

    I normally just drink water

half a litre a couple of hours before, sip it during training, half a litre after

this couple with about 3 litres over the day will ensure that your hydrated (or 4 litres if your not training)

on occasion I will also have a thai red bull (google krating daeng) or an M-150 if its a short session

the thai red bulls are great for short high intensity sessions (maybe a half hour of rolling with a mate during an open mat)

I find they have a negative effect if its a full length class as they send you on a crash after about an hour or so

dont drink 2 though... 1 is enough

I once used them to make jagerbombs, baaaaaaaad idea! lol
