It was precursor to the forum, you have newsgroups where posts can be made and replied to, and then someone twigged that you could upload binary files to it.

Anyone with a server capable of handling the load can join the network and distribute the newsfeed, or in alt.binaries case, all the w4r3z. It's impossibly hard to crack down on due to the nature of it's infrastructure.

Access to alt.binaries isn't free, but it's pretty cheap, anything from $4.99 to $24.99 depending on what package you get. Check out Giganews, Astraweb, Supernews, Newsdemon.

Here is what you need for awesomeness

http://www.newsleecher.com/ (to download "backup" copies of software, video etc)

    http://usenet-news.net/ (to buy download blocks)

http://www.quickpar.org.uk/ (to fix any broken downloads)

and an invite from anyone who uses www.newzbin.com
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

Then just use virgin newgroup. Its free.

The retention is only 7 days but its free. Basically it means you can only download things that have been put up in the last 7 days) Good for keeping up to date with TV and new releases but not getting old shows etc. (will need to pay for higher retention for that)

And yes you could use all kinds of programs to unzip and unpar and repair etc etc. But just use this.

SABnzbd(+) Its legit and free and browser based and unpars/unzips and repairs everything for you. Basically you dont have to do a thing apart from download the NZB.

Setup I use is AltBinz - free version (this is your news reader) , Astraweb on the $11pm unlimited usage offer, quickpar (free) for repairing the files, winrar (free) for unzipping files and a nzb website or Binsearch (free) for getting the nzb headers. Altbinz will unpack and unrar and delete files no longer needed automatically. Job done easy peasy.
