Its the partial pressure of the oxygen at altitude that brings about an increase in red blood cells. The rate defining step with all this is the gaseous exchange of oxygen from lungs to the blood, this is driven by the partial pressure of the oxygen in the air.

With the gas mask stuff your bringing less air of the same partial pressure into the lungs. The gaseous exchange will be at the same rate. It does make any active harder but the power output is less so i think the physiological adaptations might take a hit as well.

Psychologically it might have some value the way doing anything thats really stinking hard is. Like Barry Gibson stated in FO training with a gumshield in makes more sense.

Would love top see someone throw up in one it would be ace.

Seriously though what would high altitude living have on your cardio vascular system by simply doing fuck all while living up there and then coming back and say runnig a half marathon?

The lower air density means there is less oxygen in the air. Your body adapts by increasing red blood cell count.

Obviously training is important too. Cardio training (at the right HR zone) stretches the left ventricle and increases stroke volume, leading to a lower resting heart rate among other things. So each beat of your heart supplies more oxygen. Common sense (as well as practical experience) would tell you that adaptions would be proportional to the amount of time spent training in the right zone. By training in an oxygen rich environment, you increase the duration of the training (or intensity, if that is what you are after).

So ideally, train in an oxygen rich environment and spend the rest of the time at altitude. Hopefully that answers your question.
