What is Boxing day and why is it called that?

I always go to Ireland in summer and sometimes in winter to visit my grandparents. The day after Christmas is called Boxing day over there. What is boxing day?

I though it was called boxing day everywehere lol, and probs cause ur up to ur knees in boxes after christmas :P

It has absolutely nothing to do with boxing fact.

Many different people follow different things dude, goes back 100's of years because i studied it in history, servants used to get Boxing day off to visit their relatives and their owners gave them ''boxes'' of prezzies etc. People used to put boxes outside churches to collect food for homeless people... Look it up you'll find loads.
