Thread: Countering the over the top grip?

Default Countering the over the top grip?

Any tips on how to counter the over the top grip? Taller players constantly take this grip on me and I have a hell of time avoiding being thrown once they take it (usually with uchi mata).

Double leg them or attack with a hip throw. Their high grip (if not done properly) can leave them exposed to such techniques. However, if their high grip is effective and technically correct then the above will be easier said than done. In this case there are a few tricks you can use to pop their grip off. However, they are difficult to articulate in writing on a forum. One of the best methods to pop a high grip off is to get your shoulder insider your opponents forearm (rather than their forearm on top of your shoulder), then grip under their armpit, make a fist and drive into them extending your arm. This overstretches their grip and pops it off. I have no idea if you can properly visualise what I mean, so the best way to learn it would be to ask a competent competitive Judo coach.

Oh one more method is not to let them get the high grip in the first place, by grabbing their sleeve as they come into grip (several methods and tricks, to vast to condense into writing).

Your routine is boring. People have seen this on forums a million times and it's always retarded.

Quite hard to visualise from text, but since wrist attacks are legit in bjj, you can "give" your opponent your shoulder then throw your arm over (of the same side being gripped) with the intention of bringing your armpit down over their forearm/wrist (depending how loose their grip is) then driving your elbow underneath their arm and tearing your shoulder away from them.

If you really can't shake the grip, in a BJJ comp, it's probably safest to put a foot on their hip (straight leg, same side as being gripped) and sit to open guard.

Leg attacks or grip the belt and collar to keep them from penetrating for the throw.
