true story
about 3 years a go a guy who trains karate came to my class.
We were drilling a guard pass.
while drilling I could hear him saying to one of my lads. "this is bullshit, this leaves you open to get elbowed"
After a few more minutes of drilling it I ask the class if any one is struggling with the technique.
This guy tells me in front of the class that if someone tryed to pass his guard like this he would knock them out with elbows.
I try and be diplomatic and explain that we drill the pass without strikes to ensure we are learning the technique correctly, and once we have learnt the technique we adapt it to deal with a street fight or MMA situation.
In front of the class he says "im sorry mate but this wont work in a million years with strikes"
this last remark tips me over the edge as by now he is trying to belittle me in front of everyone.
I say to him the reallity is if he were to start striking then the person passing can also strike thus giving the person on their back serious problems.
If he wanted to try the technique under pressure i was happy to oblige.
He says lets see if you can pass with me striking.
This was one of these moments where your adrenaline kicks in a bit cos you now have to keep face in front of all your students and the reallity is that i could get knocked out.
Anyway i get in his guard, i say go and he thows an elbow that missed my nose by a centimetre. i posture back and punch him straight in the bollocks, his guard opens wide so i hand palm him to the nose, pass to side, move to north south and tap him with a north south choke.
I ask him if he would like to try again and he declines the offer.
that was the first and last time I saw the Karate black belt at my class.
The moral of this story is dont come to my session and try and mug me off in front of my lads cos win or lose im gonna give you a good fight
