    1.

In both primary and high school I was always taught that anything multiplied by 0 is 0.

    So in effect 40 + 40 (=80) x 0 (=0) + 1 = 1

    But would it not depend on how the question is formatted? i.e. 40 + (40 x 0) + 1 = 41

    If it's as straight forward as 40 + 40 x 0 + 1 then it would be 1.

    40 + 40 = 80, x that by 0 is 80 lots of 0. Plus 1 is 1.

Anything x 0 is 0 worded like that

    41. You do all the multiplication (or division) first. If it was 40 + 40 and then multiplied by zero, you'd have to stick the (40 + 40) in brackets.

    Maths is for gays anyway.

    It's the same as '40 + 40x', it's obviously not as simple as saying it's 80x, that would be (40 + 40)x.

But there are no brackets at all...

Even on a calculator it comes up as 1.

    the way its written you do it sequentially. So: 40 + 40 = 80. 80 X 0 = 0. 0 + 1 = 1

    Done.
