Wrist locks

At what point does a wrist lock become grabbing the glove? its an issue ive raised with refs at events and they dont seem to switched on with this???

a fighter attacks a wrist from guard to aid a sweep or turnover, but has to grab the hand/glove!


does a referee

A) wait to see what the fighter is doing with the hand

B) warn the fighter to let go of the glove?

I would guess it just depends on what your fingers are doing? If you keep them in a cupped position, or your fingers are hooked over to the palm should be fine surely? If you grab just around the padded part of the glove, then it's illegal.

Has any MMA fight ever been finished with a wristlock? I use them a lot in bjj and have submitted with them in competition... but can't remember ever seeing one in MMA.

wrapping your wrist as part of a handwrap for mma (along with the bulky wrist portion of the glove) makes a wristlock pretty much impossible

Yeah, can't imagine it would be easy. Some guys don't use heavy wrapping though. Must have happened somewhere once at least??

even with minimal wrapping the glove relieves a lot of pressure.

If any fingers or thumb insert anywhere on the glove or cup the edges of gloves forcing movement it would be grabbing the gloves. It can be difficult sometimes to judge exactly but many times if it is blatant and intentional you can see it and there are certain circumstances and positions where it is common, e.g., defending chokes/back GnP.
