    Default Just to clarify

Just wanted to make something absolutely clear cause some people seem to be hard of understanding.

You are a legitimate (insert colour) belt when a legitimate black belt with a recognised lineage awards you said belt. The fact you are good, can hang with said belts, have beat said belts in competition does not make you a (insert colour) belt, only when you have been officially awarded your e.g. purple belt are you then in fact a purple belt regardless of ability.

I would rather have skills above my perceived grade than the other way around as at the end of the day it's about getting better. But if you haven't been awarded your grade legitimately please stop wearing it as it is embarrassing.

Very true. I always find it odd when people say "He's xxxx belt level"... it is a meaningless statement. There is no objective level, it's just based on instructor judgement. Either you're a certain belt under a specific instructor or you're not.

I think in certain situations they can but in the UK there is no need given the plethora of black belts available.

    FIFTH CHAPTER
    Instructors and Supervisors

In some countries the IBJJF allows athletes who have not achieved the rank of black belt yet to sign as instructors. Actually these athletes are officially considered supervisors.
Brown and purple belts can be supervisors, although in some countries only brown belts can have the rank. In case the supervisor is a purple belt, he can only grade students up to blue belt; in case the supervisor is a brown belt, he can only grade students up to purple belt.
This is a temporary measure that will only be applied in countries that do not have yet enough certified black belt instructors available for the development of the sport. Once there are enough black belts, the supervisor rank will no longer exist.

    i.e. N/A in the UK
