No doubt you can get good without the gi. Doubt anyone would argue against that. I think the gi benefits everyone though.

For every example of a wrestler doing well there is a counter example of a wrestler getting subbed by a jiu-jitsu guy.

I would say there are more wrestlers in the top level game than BJJ guys atm, in terms of numbers. But the Yanks and Brazilians supply about 80% of the top guys realistically between them.

I prefer watching a good submission guy hunting a finish to a wrestler grinding out a decision, but also admire a good GnP clinic. Getting off track again here tho ha ha

Still going?... Rob pretty much hammer>nail>head'ed it like 2 pages back. Why not mix a bit wrestling, with nogi then with the gi, compare the lot and hey-presto!

You need to change your settings as im only on the 2nd page

I dont think anyone can nail it tbh, it seems matter of opinion rather than matter of fact.

But im all for training as many ways as possible to improve, it seems those from a gi background believe its beter and those from a wrestling background dont necessarily dont see it that way.

I agree it can sharpen up technique for escapes and sweeps and subs, but i also think it can lead you into a few bad habits for MMA as well.

The biggest mystery for me is why do people always raise the issue of training in a gi and say it has negatives for MMA, yet I've never seen anyone saying the same for doing striking with big gloves on?

No, why would it be a joke? Big gloves allow you to block and parry much easier, not good to depend on that in small gloves. Obviously there are also safety concerns of cuts and broken hands but the original point stands true. People train with big gloves and use then use them to cover up in ways which won't work that well in MMA, yet they won't train gi cos you can use it for stuff which doesn't work in MMA.

That's a valid point, you can't cover up the same way you can with 16 ouncers when using 4 ouncers.
