Cage Warriors Fighting Championship featherweight champion Jim Alers (pictured) has been named CWFC’s Fighter of the Year for 2013.

The 27-year-old, who is unbeaten in seven career outings for the promotion, topped our poll in the 2013 CWFC Awards, sponsored by London Fight Store and IrishMMA.com, which attracted over 25,000 votes from Cage Warriors fans worldwide over the past week.

Alers finished 2013 by submitting Graham Turner at CWFC 63 in Dublin on New Year’s Eve to retain his featherweight strap and take his record to 12-1 courtesy of his eighth consecutive victory, seven of which have come inside the distance.

In Glasgow last April, the Florida native clinched the vacant belt by defeating Joni Salovaara at CWFC 53, before successfully defending the title at September’s CWFC 59 in Cardiff against Martin Svensson.

“Being Fighter of the Year for Cage Warriors seems unreal to me,” said Alers, who finished second to James Brum in the polling for 2012 Fighter of the Year. “This is where my career began and it will always feel like home. Thank you to Cage Warriors and to everybody who voted for me.

“2013 was a very challenging year for me, filled with ups and downs. But through the support of loyal friends, loving family and outstanding fans, I was able to push through it all and come out with a successful year.”

Alers claimed 15% of the votes in the Fighter of the Year category, narrowly edging out CWFC lightweight champion Ivan Buchinger (13%) and bantamweight title-holder Brett Johns (11%).

However, there was plenty of consolation for Buchinger and Johns elsewhere. With a 3-0 run in 2013 that included his triumph in the CWFC bantamweight title tournament, unbeaten 21-year-old Johns received 24% of the votes to be named Breakthrough Fighter of the Year, in what was the closest of all eight categories, ahead of Amanda Kelly (23%) and Sean Carter (19%).

Buchinger, meanwhile, claimed the Submission of the Year award with 27% of the votes for his CWFC 60 win over Mick Sinclair (WATCH), with James Pennington (19%) finishing second and Paul Redmond (18%) third.

The Fight of the Year award also went to Buchinger , along with Stevie Ray, for their enthralling battle at CWFC 63 which saw the 27-year-old Slovak win CWFC’s lightweight gold (WATCH). Buchinger and Ray took 36% of the votes, while 18% went to Brett Johns vs. Jordan Desborough and Neil Seery vs. Mikael Silander claimed 14%.

Having not been included in the 2012 Awards due to it taking place after the voting was held, CWFC 51 in Dublin was voted our Event of the Year with 33% of the votes, with former CWFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor claiming 45% of the votes to win the KO of the Year award for his spectacular stoppage of Ivan Buchinger at the same event (WATCH).

Martin Sheridan’s KO of Jordan Desborough (15%) at December’s CWFC 62 in Newcastle was second, while third place went to Joanne Calderwood (13%) for her April win against Sally Krumdiack at CWFC 53.

Calderwood’s Dinky Ninjas camp in Scotland, who picked up nine CWFC victories in 2013 including a lightweight title triumph for Stevie Ray, were voted Club of the Year by 20% of CWFC fans, ahead of Ireland’s SBG (17%) and England’s BKK Fighters (15%).

Finally, having seen his Gym 01 team go 7-2 under the CWFC banner in 2013, the Coach of the Year award goes to Brian Adams (17%). John Kavanagh of SBG Ireland was second (14%), with Dinky Ninjas coach James Doolan (13%) finishing third.

All winners will receive equipment and apparel courtesy of 2013 CWFC Awards sponsors London Fight Store. Cage Warriors Fighting Championship would like to congratulate all nominees and winners, and thank you - the fans - for supporting our athletes by casting your votes in such huge numbers.
