CWFC 79 main card released as Marshman defends his middleweight title on October 15
Jack “The Hammer” Marshman is set to make the first defence of his middleweight title against Andreas Michailidis when the promotion returns to the Newport Centre in Wales on Saturday, October 15.
The contest of Marshman and Michailidis will headline CWFC 79 and will stream live on UFC Fight Pass, BT Sport and Viasat in Scandinavia. Tickets can be purchased here.
Jack Marshman (20-5) is one of the best UK middleweights outside of the UFC. The Welshman won the promotion’s vacant middleweight strap in London at CWFC 77 when he KO’d Frenchman Christopher Jacquelin with a right hook just before the bell in the first round.
The 26-year-old is on a six-fight winning streak, which includes four CWFC wins, most notably against highly ranked Bola Omoyele at CWFC 69, former UFC vet Che Mills at CWFC 72 and Ali Arish via guillotine at CWFC 76. Marshman, famed for his heavy hands has yet to be submitted as a professional.
Andreas Michailidis (7-2) from Athens, Greece is coming off two victories, which include a TKO win over Arbi Madaev in Grozny, Chechnya in October 2015, and a decision win over the powerful striker Ion Pascu in the UAE earlier this year. It is worth noting that Pascu defeated Marshman in 2013 and went the distance with former Cage Warriors middleweight champion Jack Hermansson at CWFC Fight Night 11 in April 2014.
Michailidis also went 1-1 in the USA during 2014 where he defeated Daniel Hernandez at KOTC before losing to Jason Butcher at Bellator.
Welterweight veterans Che Mills and Lew Long return to Cage Warriors in what is sure to be a bruising battle between two of the sports most durable athletes - both fighters will be looking for redemption in Wales.
Lew Long (12-4) will be looking to get back into the win column after steely Swede Andreas Ståhl, snapped his six-fight winning streak at CWFC 76. Che Mills’ (16-8-0-3nc) last defeat came at the heavy hands of current CWFC middleweight champion Jack Marshman at Cage Warriors 72, Mills drops back to welterweight for this contest.
Martin Svensson and Scott Clist will contest a lightweight bout in what looks set to be one of the cards most intriguing battles.
Martin Svensson (14-6) returns to the CWFC after a stint on the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter show where he won two fights before withdrawing due to injury. The 31-year-old Swede is 2-1 in the CWFC with wins over Robbie Olivier and Dave Hill in 2014 and was a former CWFC featherweight title challenger – he lost out to Jim Alers who now competes in the UFC. Following defeat in his full UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 84 in February in London, he signed with CWFC earlier this summer.
Scott Clist (11-2) is looking for his third CWFC win in six months after defeating Brad Wheeler and Tim Wilde at CWFC 75 and CWFC 77. Clist is from a kickboxing background and is famed for his striking which makes this bout a classic match up with Svensson who is more comfortable on the mat. All of Clist’s wins have come via stoppage but Svensson is his toughest and most decorated opponent to date.
Two featherweight tussles feature on the card between Eddi Pobivanez (3-1) and local prospect Jack Shore (2-0) and between Arnold Quero (13-4-0-1nc) and Nad Narimani (9-2).
Pobivanez vs. Shore was due to take place at CWFC 76 earlier this year but Pobivanez withdrew due to injury. Shore featured on the card in a quick win over David-Tonatiuth Crol.
Quero was to feature on the promotion’s Liverpool Card, CWFC 78 but his opponent had to withdraw due to injury. The Paris based 31-year-old is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak while Narimani forced a quick tap from his opponent Daniel Requeijo in the third round of a thrilling bout the last time the promotion was in Wales.
In a bantamweight bout, UK based Irishman, Martin Sheridan will do battle with Josh Reed.
Martin Sheridan (8-6) makes a welcome return to Cage Warriors, having fought for the promotion on three occasions before. He comes to this bout off a win earlier this year against Scott Pooley but is best known for his spectacular KO (knee) win over Jordan Desborough at CWFC 62 in December 2013. He also went the distance with Paddy Pimblett in 2014 at CWFC 65.
Josh Reed (5-0) a Welshman from Tillery Combat is promoted to the main card following an impressive KO win during the prelims of CWFC 76. However, Sheridan will be his toughest test to date. Both men have all of their wins inside the distance.
