Dan ‘The Outlaw’ Hardy Wins His UFC Debut
Warrior Promotions are proud to announce that the current Cage Warriors World Champion and European Number 1 Welterweight Dan ‘The Outlaw’ Hardy was victorious on Saturday night in his UFC debut. Hardy (Who is managed by Warrior Promotions) defeated the vastly experienced eight time Pride FC veteran Akihiro “The Japanese Sensation” Gono by spilt decision in a stand-up war at the NIA Arena in Birmingham, England.
Hardy, who signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship back in May of this year, showed tremendous spirit inside in World famous Octagon(tm) as he chased down the unorthodox and dangerous veteran throughout the 3 round clash. Despite suffering at times from Gono’s unpredictable style, Hardy was able to use his normal aggressive striking game to push the pace and land shots on the Japanese star, whilst preventing the submission expert from troubling him on the ground.
Hardy even survived several precarious moments in the last round when he landed an accidental low blow on Gono midway through the round, before Gono returned the favour with some illegal knee shots with a minute to go, which landed the Japanese star a warning from Referee Dan Miragliotta. However Hardy was able to come back and was trading with his opponent as the action drew to a close. Hardy eventually won the fight 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 and sent the near 10,000 people inside the NIA arena into a frenzy as another UK star was born inside the UFC Octagon.
This was Hardy’s third win against Japanese opposition following his wins last year over (the then) King of Pancrase; Daizo Ishige and the K-1 Heros veteran; Hidetaka Monma at Cage Force. This also increases Hardy’s win streak to 9 wins out of his last 10 bouts since September 2006, with only a controversial DQ at the hands of the Japanese Judoka Yoshiyuki Yoshida putting a blot on his record. This spectacular performance has also seen the 26 year old Englishman fly up to tenth on the Fightmatrix.com Welterweight Rankings.
Hardy and his team now waits for the call from UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva, to see if he will be fighting on the next European UFC card on January 17th in Dublin, Ireland. However Warrior Promotions would like to once again congratulate Dan Hardy on another fantastic victory and for making a superb start to his UFC career.
The Outlaw firm favourite with Fans
Hardy’s victory inside the Octagon was not the only success that the 26 year old Nottingham fighter encountered during the UFC weekend, as the rising English star was swamped throughout his time in Birmingham by the thousands of fans who attended the show, weigh-ins and other organised events. Hardy made the most of the situation and was the only fighter to attend the post weigh-in UFC Fight Club party, where he instantly made another 300 fans, as the crowd pleasing, fan-friendly fighter posed for pictures, signed autographs and gave advice to many of the UFC Fight Club members who attended the event at the Revolution Bar in Birmingham’s famous Board Street.
Hardy and his team also ensured that his UFC debut would be remembered by the fans, as they gave away over 100 bandanas. Hardy wore the bandana as he walked to the Octagon and his supporters followed suit inside the packed arena. As a result Warrior Promotions have been inundated with requests for more of the Outlaw’s trademark merchandise as have Piranha Spring Water who supplied them. If you have any photos of Dan at UFC89 or fans wearing the bandana, go to www.danhardymma.com and upload directly into Dan’s picture gallery.
The future looks bright for this young rising UFC star who has now returned to Los Angeles, where he plans to relax for a few weeks with his girlfriend before starting to prepare for his second fight in the UFC, which is likely to take place early next year. Both Warrior Promotions and Dan Hardy would also like to thank all of his sponsors for the support they gave him in the lead-up to the fight and on the night.
