Greg Loughran To Face Eddie Alvarez At The First Bellator Fighting Champion
Former Cage Warriors UK and USA veteran Greg “The Hitman” Loughran (20-10-0) has signed a four fight deal with the fledging US based Bellator Fighting Championships. The likeable 25 year old Northern Irishman is a nine year veteran of the sport and was fighting as a professional before his 18th Birthday on the Irish circuit, and before that competed as a kickboxer before making the switch to MMA in 2001.
With a professional record of 20-10-0 (which includes 7 TKO’s and 11 Submission wins), Loughran has faced some of the UK’s top talent whilst learning his trade and suffered the majority of his losses in the formative years of his career often against vastly experienced opposition. However over he past few years this talented young prospect has showed his true potential and has won 10 of his last 11 bouts.
A tough all-round fighter, Loughran is comfortable fighting both on his feet and on the floor, and holds wins over both well versed strikers and grapplers. His likeable persona and fighting style have seen him called-up to some of the top shows in the UK such as Ultimate Combat, Cage Warriors, Cage Rage, Pain and Glory, and most recently Cage Gladiators.
Last year Loughran made his Stateside debut at the inaugural Cage Warriors USA event in Kissimmee, Florida, where he defeated the highly rated local prospect Jonathan Brookins (who has since fought in the WEC and has also recently signed with Bellator too) by decision in what was probably the fight of the night. What made this win even more impressive was the fact that Loughran flew out to Florida on five days notice without his usual corner team by his side.
Loughran has also defeated some impressive names in the UK too as he holds wins over the likes of the TUF 9 contestant; Andre Winner, the Strike and Submit British and European Champion; Pete Irving, and the current Cage Gladiators British Champion; Rob Sinclair. These wins have seen Loughran secure his place in the top 10 British Rankings and he is just outside the top 10 chart in Europe too.
Now Loughran prepares for his toughest test to-date against the former BodogFIGHT, DREAM, Elite XC and K-1 veteran Eddie Alvarez (15-2-0) at the first Bellator Fighting Championships show on April 3rd. Although Loughran knows he is going into the fight as a big underdog, he gladly accepted the offer to fight Alaverz who is currently ranked 3rd in the WAMMA Lightweight rankings and will be looking to collect his second win in the State of Florida when he meets the dangerous Philadelphia based Striker at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino next month. This bout will be one of the Quarter Final bouts in the Bellator Lightweight tournament, which will take place over a period of 12 weeks and will see the winner earning $175,000 and the status of Bellator Lightweight Champion
