Martin Stapleton Claims His Second British Title At Clash Of Warriors
The UFC “Ultimate Fighter” season 9 contestant Martin Stapleton returned to action this past weekend at Clash of Warriors in Nottingham and claimed their British Lightweight Title in the process, when he defeated the young Wolfslair Academy prospect Ashley Smith (5-1-0) by Unanimous Decision after a three round stand-up battle.
The Royal Marine PTI, who is signed to Warrior Promotions Fighter Management (WPFM) increased his professional MMA record to (7-1-0) in a bout which showcased not only his superior cardio but also his growing all-round confidence. Stapleton displayed a new edge to his game by patiently picking off Smith from the outside with a stiff jab, which allowed him to control and dictate the majority of a very tense and tactical bout. Even when Stapleton found himself in trouble late in round 2, his superior cardio and recovery skills were evident and as round 3 started it was clear he still had enough gas in the tank to finish the job.
This impressive win over a very game Ashley Smith was Stapleton’s second bout since being released by the UFC following the completion of the ” TUF 9” reality TV series in June. Unlike some members of the cast who found themselves without a contract; Stapleton immediately got back to work in the UK scene and has capitalised on his time in the TUF house by seeking out big domestic fights. This has seen the Team Quanuum / Kaobon fighter capture the Strike and Submit Lightweight Title in July by defeating Andrew Fisher by a second round TKO, and Stapleton has since followed it up by defeating Ashley Smith for the Clash of Warriors British Title last weekend.
Stapleton now looks to fights overseas in either October or November, before finishing off the year with another domestic fight in December, as he looks for a speedy return to the UFC.
