Martin Stapleton Signs With Warrior Promotions
Warrior Promotions are pleased to announce that they have signed another rising UK Lightweight star in the form of the Team Quannum standout Martin Stapleton (5-1-0). Stapleton has been training in MMA since 2005 after training eight years in Muay Thai and made his professional debut back in September 2007 at the Quannum Fighting Championships 2 where he won quickly by TKO.
Stapleton who works as a Royal Marines Physical Training Instructor and previously seen action in such far away places as Iraq, the Arctic, West Africa and a location that cannot be mentioned. When he is not putting future recruits through their paces at the British Royal Marines training camp, Stapleton finds time to train six days a week in BJJ, Submission Grappling, Wrestling, Boxing and Muay Thai and is known for intensity in training and during fights.
Stapleton made his pro debut at QFC2 last September where he defeated Chris Thompson. Stapleton overwhelmed Thompson inside a round due to some powerful ground and pound, despite having to fight at a higher weight class with only 24 hours notice. Stapleton then travelled up to the North East of England to take on Steve Warris, at the third Fightzone event in December 2007. Once again Stapleton was on form as he captured the Fightzone Lightweight Title in just 42 seconds with another punishing TKO win.
The Royal Marines PTI then faced the experienced European Kickboxing Champion, Ingolf Nielson at Pride and Glory in February 2008 and delivered another dominating performance which forced Nielson’s corner to throw in the towel to stop Stapleton’s relentless ground and pound attack.
Stapleton’s next fight was in April 2008, where he made his Cage Warriors debut at “Enter The Rough House 6” and yet again suffered from considerable uncertainly when his scheduled opponent pulled out two days before the show due to injury. As a result Stapleton took on last minute replacement David Johnson and defeated him by Judges Decision in a gritty 3 round catchweight battle.
However Stapleton was not so lucky in his next bout when he lost to the undefeated submission specialist Paul Sass in Liverpool, when the skilful Liverpudlian used his patented Triangle choke to snare a first round victory in July 2008. But the Team Quannum soon bounced back a month later at Fightzone in South Shields where he defeated the tough Irishman Martin Begley by side choke in round two of a tough North East battle.
Since then Stapleton has been preparing for his 2009 campaign at various gyms around the country as well as his home base at Team Quannum. He hopes that by signing with Warrior Promotions he can push his career even further over the coming months. Andy Lillis, co-owner of Warrior Promotions was quoted as saying “I feel Martin will make big waves very soon, we are already planning Martin’s schedule for 2009 and expect him to move on to bigger and better things very soon. Martin has a full time job as a PTI in the Royal Marines, but such is his dedication to the sport he has arranged to take time out to concentrate on what we know will be an exciting and fulfilling year.”
