Mortimore withdraws from Cage Warriors 44
JAY ‘MEAN STREAK’ MORTIMORE has been forced to pull out of his scheduled heavyweight clash with Dayman Lake at Cage Warriors 44 in London on October 1 after sustaining a back injury.
Mortimore (6-2-0) picked up the injury during training over the weekend and is now facing a lengthy spell out of action, ruling him out of the event at the HMV Forum in Kentish Town which is less than two weeks away.
“I’m gutted that I’ve had to pull out of this fight,” said Mortimore. “I’ve trained very hard and was feeling great until the injury. I’ll be back in the gym as soon as possible and hopefully I’ll be on the next Cage Warriors card. I’m sorry to have let anyone down but I’d like to wish the best luck to my team-mates and everyone involved in Cage Warriors 44.”
Ahead of Fight Night 2 in Jordan earlier this month, the Cage Warriors team dealt with the late withdrawals of Jean N’Doye, Niklas Backstrom and Sheila Gaff, bringing in top quality replacements for all three fighters to ensure that a full fight card went ahead. Cage Warriors are hopeful that a replacement can now be found to take Mortimore’s place on October 1.
Cage Warriors matchmaker Ian Dean said: “Obviously everyone at Cage Warriors is upset to hear about Jay’s injury, especally as he’s worked so hard in training and also in promoting this match-up. It’s no secret that he was keen to get back to winning ways after losing to Andreas Kraniotakes at Fight Night 1.
“But this is the fight game and injuries are part and parcel of the business. Hopefully we’ll be able to put this bout on at a later date as it had all the makings of an exciting heavyweight clash between two rising UK contenders. We wish Jay a speedy recovery and we’ll now turn our attentions to getting Dayman re-matched.”
