The Warrior Promotions managed fighter Paul “Metabolic” McVeigh got back to winning ways on Sunday night at the inaugural Bushido Challenge event in Norwich, England. The Scottish based Irishman increased his professional MMA record to (16-6-0) with a fine victory over the Swedish grappling ace and TV host Musse Hasselvall in the co-main event of a stacked European card.

McVeigh methodically broke down his Swedish opponent in a three round tactical battle which saw the Dinky Ninja Fight Team member make the most of his weight advantage in this Bantamweight bout to control the action standing and in the clinch. Whilst on the ground McVeigh worked through Hasselvall’s guard landing an array of short snappy strikes, some elbows and at one stage even attempted a twister to finish the fight off the Swedish TV star.

However buoyed by support from the travelling Swedish contingent who were doted around the venue, Hasselvall battled on as he unsuccessfully tried to snare Mcveigh into a submission. Despite his best efforts McVeigh continued pushing forward and was awarded a well deserved Unanimous decision victory. This win not only reinforced his position as Europe’s premier Bantamweight but also gives McVeigh a solid platform to start his 2010 campaign next year, as the charismatic Irishman looks to secure a spot in one of the world’s elite events.

Other action saw the late replacement Kevin Thompson almost cause a monumental upset in the night’s Main Event, as he started strongly against the Bellator and M-1 veteran Daniel Tabera in their Light-Heavyweight bout. Thompson found himself pressurising the Spaniard early on, securing back and full mount before being swept. Then as both men returned to their feet before Tabera landed a knee to Thompson’s head which stunned him long enough for the foreign star to quickly lock-in a Guillotine choke to secure the win mid-way through the first round.

In the night’s only Title bout, former UFC veteran Dave Lee won the Bushido Challenge Featherweight Title by submitting Ashleigh Grimshaw in round 2 of a tactical contest. After a fast start which saw both men trading whilst on their feet, the action eventually went to the mat and as predicted by some it quickly became a game of cat-and-mouse as Grimshaw utilised his ground and pound game against the BJJ fighter before eventually overcommitting and being caught in a Rear naked choke.

Other noticeable action saw more impressive wins for Danny Mitchell and Rob Mills who defeated Sami Berik and Jonothan Westin respectively in their Welterweight match-ups. Mitchell looked calm and composed as he increased his record to 7-0 with a dominant ground display. Whilst Rob Mills showed explosive power in his KO win over his Sweden opponent. Whilst Papy Abedi showed why he is a growing force in the European Middleweight division as he increased his record to 6-0 after landing a huge overhead right on the butt scooting Nelton Pontes,  before finishing him off with some sharp ground and pound which forced the stoppage early in round 1.

Overall it was an impressive first effort from the Bushido Challenge promoter Travis Flannagan who mixed some solid domestic talent with some of Europe’s finest up-and-coming fighters
